“The Only True Protest Is Beauty” Opens at Fondazione Dries Van Noten

Opening in Venice within the historic Palazzo Pisani Moretta, Fondazione Dries Van Noten marks a significant new chapter for Dries Van Noten, extending his creative vision beyond fashion into a broader cultural platform dedicated to craft, design, and artistic exchange. Established together with Patrick Vangheluwe, the foundation emerges not simply as an exhibition venue, but as an interdisciplinary space shaped by a slower, more reflective approach to making, one that privileges material intelligence, experimentation, and human gesture over immediacy.

Its inaugural exhibition, The Only True Protest Is Beauty, sets the tone for that vision. Presented across 20 rooms of the palazzo from April through October 2026, the exhibition brings together more than 200 works spanning fashion, contemporary art, design, decorative arts, and material experimentation. Rather than following a chronological or thematic structure, the presentation unfolds as a sequence of visual encounters where disciplines intersect unexpectedly, encouraging viewers to navigate through contrast, tension, and surprise rather than fixed interpretation.

Historic fashion pieces appear alongside sculptural installations, contemporary textiles, glass works, ceramics, and conceptual interventions, creating conversations between generations, mediums, and aesthetic languages. Works by figures such as Christian Lacroix and Comme des Garçons are placed in dialogue with artists including Peter Buggenhout, Misha Kahn, and Ann Carrington, producing a layered reflection on beauty not as passive elegance, but as something capable of disruption, provocation, and transformation.

The setting itself is central to the experience. Rather than serving as a neutral backdrop, Palazzo Pisani Moretta actively shapes the exhibition’s atmosphere. Its frescoed ceilings, historic interiors, and accumulated layers of Venetian history become part of the curatorial narrative, creating an ongoing dialogue between contemporary interventions and centuries-old craftsmanship. Material works exploring fragility, transparency, ornament, and transformation resonate particularly strongly within this environment, reinforcing the foundation’s larger interest in making as a living, evolving language rather than a static tradition.

At its core, Fondazione Dries Van Noten proposes a different pace of cultural engagement. In contrast to the accelerated rhythms of fashion cycles and contemporary image culture, the institution is conceived as a place where ideas can unfold gradually, where disciplines overlap freely, and where beauty becomes a catalyst for reflection rather than decoration.

Future programming will expand beyond exhibitions to include residencies, collaborations, and educational initiatives designed to support emerging voices and foster international creative exchange. In Venice, a city defined by cultural layering, craftsmanship, and historical reinvention, the project feels particularly resonant.
