Some buildings invite us to see the world differently. This remarkable project by Nikken Sekkei does exactly that, transforming a simple everyday scene into an immersive architectural experience where familiar objects take on an entirely new scale.
Created for the Japanese confectionery company Shunkadō, the development combines a sweets shop, café, offices, and banking facilities within a concept inspired by one of the company’s core values: bringing people together around a table. Rather than treating this idea as a metaphor, the architects translated it directly into built form by enlarging ordinary household furniture to monumental proportions.

At the center of the project stands an oversized table, magnified to roughly thirteen times its normal size. More than a symbolic gesture, it functions as the primary architectural element, acting as a vast canopy that shelters the spaces below. Hidden within its structure are lighting systems, drainage infrastructure, and structural components, seamlessly integrated into what appears to be a simple tabletop.
Surrounding the giant table, enormous chairs reinforce the illusion of stepping into a world where human scale has been dramatically altered. Together, these oversized elements blur the line between architecture, sculpture, and playful storytelling, creating an environment that feels both familiar and unexpected.

Beneath this monumental framework, transparent glass volumes accommodate the building’s various functions. Their restrained and minimalist design allows the oversized furniture forms to dominate the visual experience, making visitors appear as miniature figures inhabiting an enormous domestic landscape.

Constructed using steel and reinforced concrete, the project balances technical precision with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Finishes inspired by natural timber soften the monumental forms, while additional oversized objects and gift-box-like elements strengthen the impression of a giant family table viewed from above.

More than a commercial complex, the project becomes a powerful exercise in perception. By transforming everyday objects into architecture, Nikken Sekkei creates a space that is simultaneously functional, playful, and memorable, a built reminder that even the most ordinary things can become extraordinary when viewed through the lens of imagination.
